-218 gisjef@i... (jason fink - isd 3943) 1970‑01‑01 A Formal Introduction

Dear Gentle Galoots,

I have decided that it is at last time to post my bio...
Hopefully the GM doesnt have the ability to see how long
I have lurked, else I may be incurring his wrath.

By day I am a GIS (Geographic Information Systems)
programmer, providing easy access to geographic info
for the data crunchers & planning mongers at the City of
Albuquerque.

However, by night I alternate between Humble Galoot, MDF
Chopping Normite, Beer-swilling PUNK Rocker, and finally
a Sensitive-type family man.

Although my great grandfather was a carpenter, no one else in my
family has much interest in wood. I became interested while
in college (class of 87) after building shelves for my burgeoning
LP collection. The massive Unisaw in the University Sculpture
Lab was where my tool bug began.

Further down the road, I discovered the books of Krenov, and
became enamored with his furniture & his approach. His talk
of handtools & especially planes, tempered my "big-iron" urges
somewhat... but it wasnt until I learned how to sharpen a plane
blade (not very long ago, I might add), that my neander-tendencies
began to be expressed. With the ability to handle planes, chisel,
and scrapers under my belt (at a very average skill level),
I now need to tackle the next "big-unknown".... hand saws!
How you guys can those things to work is beyond me.

My favorite old-tool is a Sargent jack plane (big sucker,
kinda like a Stanley #7) which was a gift for building
a Doggie-Deck. I also have a cool assortment of other
planes, which had belonged to my great-grandfather (a
German immigrant & carpenter). Included are 2 Stanley
5C's, 2 stanley block planes, a Stanley #45 with almost
no parts left (bummer!), and some completely mangled
wooden planes.

I love old tools & I love new tools .... tools tools tools!
My sawdust-filled shop has a spiritual air, almost cathedral
like, that is both inspiring & invigorating (Even if
she-who-is-to-be-obeyed stores all our trash by the door).

In addition to the tool thing, I have a wonderful daughter
who has just turned one year old, a beautiful wife (& extraordinary
graphic artist) and one hellva loud guitar amplifier.

With that kind of set-up, life is certainly grand.

Later folks, hope to meet some of you someday!
