Gentle Galoots, Alvin Sellens' "Dictionary of American Hand Tools" has these definitions, accompanied by quite a few illustrations: Shovel: A handled tool with a broad hollowed-out blade used to lift or move loose material. Spade: A digging and separating tool capable of cutting action as it is pushed into the work.
