Galoots

This past Saturday Esther joined me and my wife at an SCA event.
This was the Queen's Prize Tournament, wherein craftspeople of all stripe
show off their great (and not so great) works.  They especially like to see
people brave enough to show off their failures, so that we can all learn from
those mistakes.  No one should be hiding craft knowledge anymore (ha ha).

I hauled out my Gokstad bed, and was thanked by the QPT Wrangler for
bringing in a large item.  Nearly everything was very small scale or very
portable at the event.  Mine was not.

The Queen's prize went to a gentleman who built a spit jack out of wood.
He said it is a prototype for an iron version, and it works well. For a
prototype he did a thorough job, as there are lignum vitae bearings inlet
into the posts with neatly cut sliding dovetails.  Lots of hand work with
files to clean up the gears after drilling out the waste.  And he used
solid walnut instead of baltic birch.  The only suggestion I had for him
was that he should have used a rubber chicken for the display.

Here it is in action, assuming that GIC video gallery still works.
