Signs of the times

1) My local grocery store has shrink-wrapped, kiln-dried fire wood.

2) A brand new quart of Minwax Polyurinate - the rim of the lid is 2/3 the size
of the rim on cans I have on the shelves, making it a 10 minute job to open the
thing without wrecking the rim

Around here imported firewood sold at retail has to be kiln dried to
prevent the spread of bad bugs. In the past five years every single
ash tree in this area has died from the emerald ash borer. There are
no standing live ash at all. That's a sign of the times and it sucks.

Ed, it gets stranger. My Northwoods log cabin is in the Chippewa National
Forest. There forest has unimaginable quantities of downed, or broken and
hanging, dry firewood, free for the taking. And yet, stores in the area
sell firewood, some shrink-wrapped.

Apropos of firewood:

You know you've lived in the San Francisco Bay Area too long when you see a
sign that says:
Free Firewood
and your first thought is *who is Firewood and what did he do?*

The next chapter on the Minwax. Just noticed that the lid was not completely
seated in the rim and it popped right off. I tapped it all the way down last
night. ????????

Ditto on the dead ash trees here in Waterloo- devastated the Ash trees
here.
In fact, I am waiting for the guys to come by to drop a few big trees at
the back of my property.

Here is what I did with a friend’s dead ash tree. Go backwards from the shot,

If you go forward one shot, you can hear it

I have a few small ash trees. I use the trimmed branches for pegs and
occasionally handles.

My woods had beech at one point before my time. I’ve found 2 boles on the
ground.

One was so bug eaten there was no point disturbing the residents, who would only
have found my woodpile.

The other was pretty bad but not yet humus. It is harder than stone.

Haven’t decided what to do with it but know it won’t happen until after I get a
band mill.
