Seems like, with only a tiny minor modifications, this could be made so
that it has an overlap that would hang over the edge of the bench that
could then be clamped into a face vise instead of screwing to the bench
top.  One could possibly even make it so that it actually has pins on the
bottom that fit into bench dog holes on the bench top therefore making it
possible to place in different locations as needed on the bench top.  Of
course, naturally, one could simply make one in such a way that it could
simply be clamped to the bench top with either bar clamps or even holdfasts.
