264771 William Ghio <bghio@m...> 2018‑01‑22 Bench stop wedge
I don’t know if it has any other name and am too lazy to go thru the old books
to look for it. It’s just a flat piece of wood w/ a vee cut in it. stock is
wedged in the vee w/ a shaped block and stuff is locked. Very handy for edge
planing. Anybody else use one of these?

Here it is w/ three drawer sides being planed to a uniform height —

Here it is holding a short tall piece —

and here it is in pieces —

When not in use it hangs conveniently from a nail on the leg of the bench. I
just knock the wedge in place and hang it as a unit.

That's a bird's mouth. Schwarz' blog has a few entries on them in reference
to Chinese workbenches and his recent Roman build. Another v shaped
appliance is the doe's foot, which has had more press.

Bird’s mouth. Good name for it. I have a couple of Doe’s Foot hanging from
another leg, as well as a few flexible and center finding rules and of course
holdfasts. From underneath, the bench looks like a well ornamented Xmas tree.

Seems like, with only a tiny minor modifications, this could be made so
that it has an overlap that would hang over the edge of the bench that
could then be clamped into a face vise instead of screwing to the bench
top. One could possibly even make it so that it actually has pins on the
bottom that fit into bench dog holes on the bench top therefore making it
possible to place in different locations as needed on the bench top. Of
course, naturally, one could simply make one in such a way that it could
simply be clamped to the bench top with either bar clamps or even holdfasts.

Bill

I just bought a nifty commercially made version this weekend, the nicest
I've seen. Nice and heavily built, it can essentially close down to zero
thickness. This estate sale had it mounted to a bench, but mine will go on
a board for removal til needed.

Previously I've seen lots of the lighter weight ones, and bought a wimpier
one, in the box, a few years back. (Can't find the pic)

My bird's mouth is used for coping

The link copied above shows how it has a dropped edge to be secured in the vise.

I have also made a planing stop that drops into two dog holes —

There are two 1” fender washers above the 3/4” posts to set the teeth ~ 1/8”
above the bench.

The wimpier ones were marketed as HANDI-VISE. I have one still in the
original box, and one sans box. They work nicely. I decided to try
them because I was used to the Chinese and Vietnamese pinch vises
mounted to their planing benches. A few months ago I saw a cast iron
version just like yours Kirk, and snatched it up for not much money.
Good job, Kirk.
