Looking for hardware to to put a wooden jaw front vise on my bench-in-progress. The bench as a "clean slate" so options are wide open: https://i.imgur.com/bytcoFn.jpg Since I have limited funds, re-used would fit my budget better. Does not need to be quick release, but if I can afford it, that would be swell. PayPal preferred. -- John G. |

There are a lot of scissors jacks out there. The mechanism always comes with a square thread and very solid crossbolts at the front and the back. If you have time and access to some equipment, you might consider making one into a vise. Free advice is often worth what you pay, Gary Katsanis Albion New York, USA ---- John Gunterman |

GG's If there was a "LIKE" button on OLDTOOLS, I'd be clicking it for John G.'s suggestion to salvage a threaded rod and the matching crossbolts from a discarded scissors jack ! There's often a big square-threaded or Acme (trapezoidal) threaded column on an adjustable-height office chair. And, of course, there's a matching "nut." Also, we should not get "obsessed" with limiting ourselves to square or Acme threads. You could build the vise with a common vee-thread rod and upgrade it later. Sure, it would take more turns of the handle, but it would get you up and running until you can afford your "dream" vise hardware. John Ruth ________________________________ From: OldTools |

I have a pair of old draftsman's stools which have 1x10in square-thread screws and a large adjusting nut. These could be readily-adapted to clamping action, I think. I expect old piano stools have something similar. My shop time is largely devoted to tutoring students through their assigned curriculum. Also I do have some physical limitations, thanks to the accumulated injuries of 50 years, and the general passage of time. Ideally, I'd like something that I can bore three holes through a skirt board and front face for the rods/screw a'la https://www.woodcraft.com/products/woodriver-large-front-vise http://www.rockler.com/heavy-duty-quick-release-front-vise etc. |

McMaster-Carr has a good selection of acme threaded rods and nuts. Budget permitting, you could have the biggest nuts on the block... Tim Enjoying mild temps n NJ today. On Feb 20, 2018 5:23 PM, "John Gunterman" |

Not sure if they are still available but I got this one many moons ago for my workbench from a local supplier: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=236653599696546&set=a.236653539 696552.70536.100000557241591&type=3&theater">https://www.facebook.com/photo.php? fbid=236653599696546&set=a.236653539696552.70536.100000557241591&type=3&theater< /a> More photos of the bench in that album (it's public, so should be visible): https://www.facebook.com/nuno.pintodosouto/media_set?set=a.236653539696 552.70536.100000557241591&type=3">https://www.facebook.com/nuno.pintodosouto/med ia_set?set=a.236653539696552.70536.100000557241591&type=3 Good to hear from you, John. -- Cheers Nuno Souto wizofoz@i... |

Gunterman? Not THE John Gunterman? It's ME, Harrison Ford! :) LOVE Gary's suggestion of the reclaimed scissors jack. Best part is that you can find them by the trunk load at any automotive junkyard. Also, exercising my Google-Fu, here's a complete Instructable on the subject: https://www.instructables.com/id/Workbench-vice-from-reclaimed-scissor-jack/ Respectfully submitted, Darren Addy Kearney, NE On Tue, Feb 20, 2018 at 9:47 AM, John Gunterman < jgunterman@s...> wrote: > Looking for hardware to to put a wooden jaw front vise on my > bench-in-progress. > > The bench as a "clean slate" so options are wide open: > > https://i.imgur.com/bytcoFn.jpg > > > Since I have limited funds, re-used would fit my budget better. > Does not need to be quick release, but if I can afford it, that would be > swell. > > PayPal preferred. > > -- > John G. > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > OldTools is a mailing list catering to the interests of hand tool > aficionados, both collectors and users, to discuss the history, usage, > value, location, availability, collectibility, and restoration of > traditional handtools, especially woodworking tools. > > To change your subscription options: > https://oldtools.swingleydev.com/mailman/listinfo/oldtools > > To read the FAQ: > https://swingleydev.com/archive/faq.html > > OldTools archive: https://swingleydev.com/ot/ > > OldTools@s... > -- “*The Earth is Art, The Photographer is only a Witness*” ― Yann Arthus-Bertrand, *Earth from Above* *- - -* *PS...
