I have a nagging suspicion that fine, smart, capable young people have
always been around in roughly the same proportion of the population.

  Just maybe it's only my ability to discriminate and distinguish them from
the stone headed weasels  that's changed?  Good artists, to generalize
(like miners also), tend to have extensive knowledge about many disciplines
in order to excel at their work.
