268537 Anthony Seo 2019‑05‑17 Spring Jacktown Engine Show Flea Market May 2019 Day 1
This weekend is the annual Spring Jacktown Engine Show flea market.
This is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday but there are vendors that set
up early, so I was there.  The weather was mild and sunny when I got
there but it soon clouded up.  There weren't too many folks set up but
the few that were there had some goods to offer.

Some of the action.

Pickings were okay.  In woodworking tools, I got an 8" Yankee brace,
good shape, but the ratchet and chuck need some attention, a set if 6
Irwin bits in the case, a carving tool and a couple of chisels, and a
Stanley SW 6" bevel square.

In the miscellaneous department, I got an herb cutting knife, a Starrett
sheet metal thickness gage, a neat machinist protractor, a nice Snell &
Atherton leather thickness gage, a big screwplate, a leather pinking
tool hand forged from a file, a sweet little H Boker divider, a saw
setting wrest and split nut screwdriver tool, a Starrett metric rule in
the case, and an old small double caliper.

Not a great pile but it was worth the effort.

And I had posted this on Facebook yesterday but this month marks my 25th
anniversary of being in the old tool business.

Tony,

That combination saw wrest and split-nut driver tool is very interesting!
Please tell us about the maker’s mark. That thing is worthy of reproduction!

This was for fairly large split nuts. What sort of saw has that size of split
nuts?

Continuing the theme of “Oh, the things that I’ve learned on the Porch!” The
“herb cutting knife” is something I’ve seen many times without knowing exactly
what they were. I’d mistakenly thought they were weavers tools! Thanks to your
informative post, I stand corrected!

Yeah, I saw that on either Faceplant or LinkedIn. Congratulations! Did
Management give you a nice party and gold watch?

The mark is R Timmins & Son, faint but readable.  Measuring 7 13/16"
overall, the wrest area is 2 1/2" long, the screwdriver tip is 5/8"
across the outside, about 3/8" across the inside of the tips, and this
weighs 4 3/4 oz unboxed.  R Timmons & Son were long time Birmingham
England tool makers in business from 1790 until 1887 when they merged
with W Wynn.  This is sold already.

No idea but the grooves on the wrest are for fine toothed saws.

Well I have heard them called that but I have always known them as herb
chopping knives.   I know that Universal made them but until I clean
that guy I can't say if there is a maker on it  It was factory made.

Not that anybody will care, but...

I believe what you are calling an herb knife is actually a banana knife. The
first time I had one it took me forever to figure it out. I have one right now
marked Universal L. F. & C. (Landers, Frary & Clark).

If you go here you will see more about banana knives than you ever thought
possible and some old catalog reprints identifying them as such.

I’vet seen a few around here in central Missouri. I have heard them referred to
as banana knives. I would have purchased one recently but the asking price was
just a bit high for me. Figured it would be good for cutting weeds. Fairly
thin blade so should sharpen up reeeeealy sharp.

Can’t imagine how a weaver would use a knife with that length of blade with the
curve.
