269190 "yorkshireman@y..." <yorkshireman@y...> 2019‑09‑16 Jeff...
Galoots - old and new.

I’m saddened to be reporting the passing of one of our elder statesmen.

I received the following from his son

"I thought you would wish to know, and Mum wishes that I pass the message on,
that Dad passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday morning, aged 91.
We’re planning a celebration of his life on 11th October, details to be
confirmed.”

Jeff Gorman was a stalwart of the porch, always happy to pass on his expertise,
and with a wry sense of humour. His training leads us right back to Edward
Barnsley, though I seem to recall that ‘hands on’ was not Barnsley himself but
his foreman. He and I used to pull each others legs about him ‘nearly’
qualifying as a Yorkshireman, for he was a Lancashire Lad originally, and only
lived in Yorkshire for several decades. I don’t suppose the border is more than
15 miles from his house. I had the great pleasure of visiting him at Ackworth,
to deliver a holdfast sent from our favourite Alaskan blacksmith via the
galactic OldTools IronShifters delivery service, back in the days before
everything went digital. He suffered a ‘cerebral episode’ a few years ago,
which left him unable to continue his articles in a UK wooddorking magazine or
follow our talk on the Porch.

I’ll move his rocker to the honoured side of the porch, and drink a glass to
him, and the others in that corner, on October 11th.

A Number 27? Wazzat Then?

Even though he hasn’t been active here for a while, I’ll still miss him. I’ve
passed back our sympathy to Adam Gorman.

Richard,
I appreciate the notification, and like most oldtimers on the list, I am
greatly saddened by this news. I never had the pleasure of meeting Jeff in
person, but many years ago we exchanged several emails as he helped me with
a complicated (for me) joinery problem. He was a very gracious and
knowledgeable gentleman and I too will toast his memory on October 11th.

Even Jeff's usual "Wazzat then" was an educational interlude as it made
many of us use the descriptive names instead of the unremarkable numbers of
the Stanley planes.

My prayers are with Jeff's family,
Mike

Very saddened to hear this. He was something else entirely, and the world
needs more like him.

I’ve already missed Jeff for a long time.... I’ve been more of a lurker
than a contributor for many years now, but I always read whatever Jeff
posted because he had the training, the decades of experience, and the
sense of personal authority around all matters of shop skills, tips, and
how-tos. He was generous with his postings, never pedantic, and always, it
seemed to come from a place inside him that wanted to make us all a bit
more skillful in the shop. I hope his coffin was made of raised panels
(by hand) and joined by artistic and uniform hand-cut dovetails, with name
a date carved in Old English script.

Richard, Thank you for the news, sad though it is. We are all better for
having crossed his path. He was always a good antidote tor the
curmudgeon in me. Godspeed Jeff.

Thank you, Richard, for letting us know.

It may be a comfort to Jeff's family to know how fondly Jeff was
regarded by all of us gathered on the porch (as you have probably
already told them).

I live on the other side of the world so I never met Jeff face-to-face,
but I always enjoyed his contributions to the list and I remember some
very gracious off-list email exchanges with him.

I have missed Jeff's posts in recent times.
He was always one to offer good advice based on real experience.
Something all too often lacking in many other online forums.

We raised a glass of Macallan Gold t'other night and toasted Jeff.
He was a Galoot.
