29621 Marvin Paisner <paisners@n...> 1997‑10‑31 bio-(aka-tooth extraction)
The time is at hand for introductions. My name is Marvin Paisner, I am
old enough to clearly remember the first time I walked to a neighbours and
saw television. I might add I was not impressed. That opinion of course
did not last too long. I also remember my first warm feelings for a hand
tool. Until that point tools were for inflicting great acts of violence
upon lumber. Then I went on a blind date with a 'four in hand' rasp and we
passed the time fitting an axe handle to the head. Had a better time than
on some of the other dates I can remember! Time passed and woodworking
became an everyday part of my life, my collection of 'tailed apprentices'
housed in their shop provided a moderate (in a good year) income. I did
have a handtool, a low angle block plane, usually at my side, and a
chisel for cleaning off glue of course.
In the early 1980's I won a contract to reproduce some bookcases for a
Canadian National Historic Site. Financially lost my pants on that six
month bid. But as everything had to be done to the period of 1860 and done
authentically it was an education in hand planing, veneering, and
polishing. A few weeks after being awarded the above contract into serfdom
I noticed at auction a Universal plane was being offered. Now I did have
some vague knowledge as to what this was, and that it would be mighty
usefull in my upcoming project. Heavy bidding ensued, I was up against a
collector, the only other person interested in this box of scrap metal. I
was persistent and upon payment of $40 went home feeling screwed. That was
no gloat, would have had it for $10 if the collector had not been there,
and I figured ten was what it was worth. We made freinds, me and that
#55, she's a type 1 and all there, we've made some nice things,
contrary to what some might think its a wonderful tool. Much time passes,
and nice old users come my way. I too am now a 'collector'. Hand tools
are my freinds, I am comfortable with them and the other bunch, the
electric crew, well we still keep a wary eye on each other, I know their
out to get me. Woodworking is no longer my living. My family and I live
near Nelson, British Columbia, on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake. I have
owned a computer since mid summer, been on the Net about a month. Nice to
meet you Galoots.
