71802 keith mealy <kmealy@y...> 1999‑12‑01 basic bio / request
I've been with the list since it's early days, but my
bio seems to be in the bit bucket.

Here's the cliff notes version:

Day Job: Cat herder (Tech Weenie manager) for a
software company. Wife, three girls, living and
working in Cincinnati suburbs.

Interesting stuff:
Been woodworking seriously for about 15+ years.
Really started off by watching some of Roy's early
episodes. A few years ago I attended a winter
workshop in NC with Drew Langsner and made a greenwood
chair, per "Make a Chair from a Tree", by John
Alexander. Then a couple of years later this group
started up.

I'm a "mixed" woodworker, I do a combination of hand
and power tools. OK, you guys with unisaws and
shopsmiths, I see you looking at the floor. I've
made or refinished most of the wooden furniture in my
house, and now that I have two adult daughters, and
another one a Sr. in high school, they are starting to
make requests for their own places. When the house
filled up, I started making boxes, some rectilinear
and some bent shaker boxes, and taught a few classes
in shaker boxmaking. A couple of the boxes I've made
have appeared in books with a local publisher.

I've also been on a handful of mission trips with the
daughters' church youth group and play a carpenter for
a week in some remote part of north america. Church
and school also seem to have discovered my talents and
make occasional requests, including a project to build
34 bookcases for the library.

I've been involved since 1984 with 4-H woodworking
projects, first as a parent, then as an advisor, then
at state level for judging and advisory committee. I
try to stress that having an eight year old bang
together an OSB doghouse with an air nailer that dad
did 99% of the work on is not "learn by doing".
Fortunately, they are a minority that I see.

I keep my life busy and read the digests (both my
choices), so by the time I get caught up on mailings,
I don't ever seem to have much to add, so I tend to be
a lurker. Besides that, I'm not nearly the expert
that a lot of the others are. I also don't ever seem
to have a much time to rust hunt as I wish. But even
a blind pig can find an acorn from time to time.

I've met several of the galoots on the list and keep
in touch with most of the Ohio galoots that I'm aware,
plus met some others from neighboring states.
