working ona set of shelves, and I need to make the shelves... They'll be about a foot deep, and I was wondering what folks use as a guideline for how wide the individual edge jointed pieces should be. While I's love to use a single wide board, the shelves will be floating, so cupping would be a big issue. By building them up and alternating the ring direction, I figure I can minimize warpage..... thanks -J |

Ja,es, I'd start with 1 X8s. You can rip them in two to get out major blemishes or to get rid of the pith if any. Those sized boards are a pretty good buy, relatively. I have also bought 1 X 12s Which often have the pith near the center and ripped the pith out and ended up with 2 quarter sawn pieces which are good for many projects. Phil E. |

Also check out the smaller-sized lumber. Sometimes there are good deals (per board foot) if you are going to glue them up anyway. |

A cabinet maker built a bookcase for a friend, a book collector with some pretty heavy tomes. His solution, and it worked, was to put a cleat underneat the back edge of the shelves -- a piece of nominal 1" that was 1 1/4 inch wide. It kept the shelves from looking clunky. Mike in Woodland |

thanks - I don;t think I'll need that as I'm keeping the span at 36 1/2", and using 1" oak for the shelves. From what I've gathered, for a 12" deep shelf, the general consensus seems to be 3 pieces about 4" wide each..... This pretty much fits what I was thinking about, so thats what I'll use for the first batch... thanks -J |
