A cabinet maker built a bookcase for a friend, a book collector with
some pretty heavy tomes.  His solution, and it worked, was to put a
cleat underneat the back edge of the shelves -- a piece of nominal 1"
that was 1 1/4 inch wide.  It kept the shelves from looking clunky.
