Fellow galoots, In the great Oldtools tradition of reporting finished projects accompanied by photos (no pictures, didn't happen), I submit my latest creation, an 18th Century tavern table. https://static.wixstatic.com/media/d07f61_cca7d7dea24d4686868aa44b973a3322~m v2.jpg https://static.wixstatic.com/media/d07f61_8ff8b821f62549bcbec2227ac708a86f~m v2.jpg The base is poplar, with pinned mortise and tenon joinery, finished with milk paint and an overcoat of beeswax. The top is curly maple for some visual flair. As always, done with only hand tools. You can find more details on the construction process at https://www.dheyza.net/projects (feel free to check out the rest of the site). I see the pics, and the table is amazing! Thanks for sharing, Dennis. This is pure, old school galootery at its best. Inspiring, to say the least. More details about planing and finishing that figured maple when you have a chance, please! Take care, all of you, GI Greg Isola Alameda, CA USA |

Dennis, That’s a beauty. When you say eight coats of varnish, what type of varnish do you use to protect it? I’m sure that table will be well loved over the years. Congratulations, Kevin |

Thanks for sharing, Dennis. This is pure, old school galootery at its best. Inspiring, to say the least. More details about planing and finishing that figured maple when you have a chance, please! Greg Isola The maple got lightly run through a planer at the sawmill which removed some of the high spots but not all. I used a #7 followed by a #4 (both Type 11), the latter with the cap iron as close to the end of the blade as possible. The result was almost no tearout. I followed up with a scraper and lightly sanded with 320. The finish started with three applications of TransTint dye (Vintage Dark Maple), heavily sanded after each of the first two coats. Then a coat of BLO followed by eight coats of Minwax Satin Wipe-on Poly. I followed that up with some 800 grit to remove any nibs, rubbed it out with 0000 wool using Murphy’s Oil Soap (spray) as a lubricant, and then a coat of Johnson’s Paste Wax. I’m normally an oil or shellac finisher but decided to go with poly because of the harder use (spills, etc) it could face. I was worried about a plastic look but am happy to report that it doesn’t look that way at all. Dennis |

I mortised a brace across the short span at the center of the long aprons. It has a screw hole in the center and 1" slots at each end. I also glued short pieces along the aprons at various points using the same layout (hole in center of short span, slots in the others). That way the center of the top stays in place and the remainder is free to move with the seasons. Dennis -----Original Message----- From: Adam R. Maxwell |

Way nicer than any tavern table I've ever drank at, Dennis. That color you achieved on the top is amazing, which is equal to the execution of the rest of the piece. The quality of work done by denizens (and Dennises) of this list is extraordinary. -Paul, inspired in SF |
