Welcome Moshe. I think we can help you find that balance by having at
least one tool in each hand and a few more cradled in your arms and a
leg. Nice pics of the olive wood -- it looks like you have a nice start
on some rustic furniture, and some great stock for oyster shell
veneering!

Don't be shy with pics of your carvings.

Moshe, Welcome to the Porch! I am sure that you will find much of what you
are looking for right here. Now I can't think of a better situation than to
have a new Galoot-In-Training on the way, a wife that encourages you to buy
old tools and a supply of beautiful Olive Wood just out the back door.
Where did you find that woman? Some of our single members may want to know
if she has sisters or brothers at home of a similar disposition!

I am relatively new here, but I have found these folks to be helpful,
gracious and they will grease your slide down that slippery slope into old
tool heaven! If you already have had stitches then you have paid your blood
dues! There are probably not many folks here who couldn't tell you their
own stories about their accidental woundings.

Your Israeli viewpoint on old woodworking skills will give us another
perspective on our arts, crafts and obsessions. Our members outside the US
bring a much appreciated richness to our discussions. The Aussies alone
have changed my understanding of life, tools and wood Downunder!

Glad to have you here. Paul in Normal, Illinois-US

GG,
Moshe joins our august ("worthy of respect because of age and dignity"
per Webster) group.

Welcome Moshe, another view point is always useful and welcome. Having
seen the price of Olive wood from the holy land here in the states, you
could probably trade Olive wood for tools. Don't know about import/export
regulations...

Just a thought, and we want pictures of your carving...

GGs and Roy--August as in worthy of respect because of age and dignity?
Lord love a duck and me without my hip waders on! It does get deep on the
Porch from time to time. I don't mind being included in the age category,
but I'll be damned if I'll stand still for being included in the dignified
category! I am a cantankerous old Son-uf-a .... with a scraggly long beard
who dislikes most children, more dogs, all cats and cheap foreign tools that
break in your hand. Dignified, hmpff!

On the other hand, I like the idea of trading tools for Olive Wood. I'm
just sorry I didn't think of it first! And you are right, we need to see the
carvings. Moshe is among friends here. Later, Paul in Normal

159547 "Moshe Eshel" <meshel@g...> 2006‑04‑20 Bio of Moshe Eshel
I'm almost 30, Married, and expecting my first daughter in a short
time (I am EXCITED and infinitely worried).
I live in Israel (The state of) which is pretty far away from most of
you - I've just seen a newcomer (well earlier than me:-)) from
Belgium, which is closer.

I'm a computer programmer (my company insists that I am a senior
software engineer, although I have no engineering degree), working in
a job that does not interest me anymore - it used to, and thinking
about retiring or switching a job. Of which I can do neither
currently. So it's mostly dreaming...

I live in a small Moshav called Gimzo, a Moshav is a form of village
in which each of the people living in has is his own property (I'm
renting), and works his own land (although not many people in my
moshav do that anymore), however some of the property is jointly owned
and the profits (or losses) of that property is shared among the
members of the community. The Moshav I live in is where I grew up, my
parents live nearby (my father used to work the land, but now he works
in the computer industry, after he realised that he can't upkeep his
family from what he earned). The views in the area are great and there
is lots of wood (living) around (you can see this in my website
http://www.eshel.us/OliveTree/index.html which is mainly about an old
dead olive tree I harvested).

I've been interested in wood working for as long as I can remember
myself, since early grades I have been "carving" pieces of wood,
mostly to pass time, but some nice things came out sometimes, nothing
I'd show outside my close family :-).

My recent re-attraction to wood working, and on a much more serious
level, came last year, when I decided to make a set of chess pieces
for my father (read my old wood-carving skills), however, the chess
table was quite big, and while "carving" the second pawn with a
utility knife (which is obviously not suitable), I cut my finger quite
badly. While at the doctors (13 stitches!!!) I started thinking there
must be a better way to do this (chess pieces). I started envisioning
a machine in my mind which turned out to be a CNC lathe (or just a
lathe with a sliding rest) - since I knew (in my mind) that such a
thing must exist, I started looking for something I could afford and
learn - and found Wood turning. I took a class and bought a lathe, and
started producing shavings. Since my injury (nothing was lost thank
G-D except some sensation but most is intact), I am a bit scared of
power tools, and while looking for hand-planes to purchase, I was
introduced to the group by Dave Leader, who has already helped me a
lot.

I won't talk about my tools, I'm just starting on those. But I think I
already know I'll be obsessive about this thing (collecting tools),
sadly my wife encourages this so I have no checks and balances except
myself, and the premium I will need to pay since I can find almost no
tools in my home country (just saw an interesting ad - price seems a
bit expensive as most things here, but those wooden planes look
beautiful and unused).

I know I will learn a lot here, and I hope to help others with what I
can (and buy some tools in the meantime).

Welcome Moshe!! As others have said, international members such as yourself
make the porch a far richer place. I look foward to seeing your work and
hearing about the "old tool" hobby in Israel. And of course Mazel Tov to
your and your Wife on your coming new addition!

Moshe

Though also quite isolated, on the island of Taiwan, I felt the warm
welcome of the porch and the galoots right from the begining. I've got
my first Japanese plane from a local Taiwanese craftman who is still
making traditional wooden bath tubs (unfortunately for the craft, not
any more with hand tools). This gift was a totally unexpected and nice
surprise. I'm sure your journey with us will also be full of pleasant
surprises.

Nice to meet you, and why not inviting your wife on the porch as well!

159628 "Moshe Eshel" <meshel@g...> 2006‑04‑22 Re: Bio of Moshe Eshel
Thank you all - and I do mean all, for your warm welcome, it was a
pleaseure to have to read so many emails directed at me that are not
SPAM but actual humans talking (writing)...

>From my lurking and this I see that I have come to be a part of nice
group of people (some would say august :-)) who like to help.

In the near future I hope to share with you a lot (once I get me a camera...)

About those tools in the picture, I will try my luck with taking the
price down which was in US Dollars (so is quite expensive) but if not,
no harm. Thank you all for your opinion - though there were
differences in opinion, I still learned enough to make some decision
at least.

Have a great week!
