Thought I'd posted this before, but since I can't remember seeing it
show up, what the heck...too bad I didn't save a copy of the
original.
Anyway, greetings esteemed Galloots! My name is Steve, and I'm a
beginning (ultra-beginning, actually) woodworker, and while I should
probably label myself more of a "hand-tools" freak, rather than an
"old-tools" freak, I'm getting more and more into the older species
as time goes by. Lack of space, a fondness for hand-crafting things,
and respect for the neighbors immediately next to my garage have lead
me down this road.
During the day I'm a Sys Admin/programmer/animator guy for a visual effects
facility in Valencia, CA (related note: I find it interesting how
many Galloots seem to have techno-centric jobs; maybe the old-tool
phenomena is a bit of a rebellion against all of the day-to-day
silicon? Hmmmm.....). Woodworking has been on hold for the last few
weeks, as I entered a self-imposed hobby-moratorium until I take my
Private Pilot checkride this Saturday (wish me luck!). Assuming all
goes well, I'll start in on that Shaker-style bed I need to build
(the better to lure a SWMBO with ;^)...planning on Poplar, with a nice
milk-paint finish, something simple (talked myself out of
hand-tooling a pencil-poster, considering this only is my second project)
The not-so-vast tool collection is mostly new; a Stanley bit 'n
brace, some Sorby mortise-stabbers, a Record #5 jack, a ryoba from
Japan Woodworker, and some neat little rosewood marking gages (realx,
they'll be old and patina'd in twenty or thirty years...). The
oldies are simply a block plane with an adjustable mouth (probably
Stanley, hafta check...) and a wooden smoother that I got at Andy's
latest swap meet (the iron is stamped "J.E. Matheson & sons,
Sheffield", and some guy named R. Bradbury name-stamped the hell out of
the body...who does this guy think he is, Chaka?)
[Sorry about that reference, Chaka was an infamous L.A. graffitti
tagger from a few years ago...]
Anyway, I plan on bringing the 'older' proportion up to respectable
numbers, just not real quickly, since I don't really know what's what
deal-wise.
Completely unrelated personal crap? Jes' turned 29 a couple weeks
ago, enjoy afore-mentioned flying, cooking (mmmm...Cajun food....),
getting into competetive shooting (IPSC Limited?), and want to build
a bunch more stuff, including some wooden planes, now that I've read
the FWW book on Planes 'n Chisels, I'm inspired.
There. Now that I've bored y'all to death, I'll try not to be too
much of a non-contributing #@%*!'ing lurker, assuming anybody asks
something I can help with.
