I mortised a brace across the short span at the center of the long aprons.
It has a screw hole in the center and 1" slots at each end. I also glued
short pieces along the aprons at various points using the same layout (hole
in center of short span, slots in the others). That way the center of the
top stays in place and the remainder is free to move with the seasons.

Outstanding, Dennis! Really nice result, and it's great to see it done with
hand tools. How did you attach the top to the base?
