Howdy wood cutters. My name is Scott Little. About 3 years ago, I started
a serious remodeling project on the house in which we now live. My wife & I
wanted to do a lot of non-standard things and that led directly to a desire
for custom-made window sills, door jambs, etc. I've been pretty good at
making things for years and years but I didn't discover the joys of planes
until I got immersed in this project.
I started out with one brand-new 20 degree Stanley block plane (the good
version). Early on I stumbled onto Japanese water stones (I could never
make oil stones work right) which enabled me to sharpen the thing properly
and BOOM, I was hooked. One thing led to another and, before you could say
"Real men don't use beltsanders", I was dragging my wife INTO antique stores
instead of the other way around! Today, a mere 3 years later, I have about
24 planes, mostly old, all useable. My pride and joy is a Stanley 604 that
really works beautifully. I've also got #'s 3 thru 8, several block planes,
a #113 circular, a #93 shoulder, a tired old #45, and a handfuld of wooden
molding planes including a set of match planes that really make decent
tongue and groove.
During the day, I'm a mechanical engineer/experimental physicist. I'm a
pretty good machinist and welder (I have much more experience at that than I
do at woodworking).
I'd like to make some simple furniture someday. I've made a few dovetail
joints (definitely amateur quality)...enuf to gain a healthy respect for the
guys who used to knock them out in the good ole days.
